Planning your kids’ playroom

Plan the layout round play

Keep the middle of the floor clear and push storage to the walls. A partition in the Build Studio can set aside a toy store, and a window on the side you can see from the house means you can keep an eye on things.

Safe by design

Never fit a lock the children cannot open from inside. Keep tools, garden chemicals and anything sharp in a separate store rather than in the playroom, and fix tall shelves to the wall.

Windows give light, but think about where the children will play and what is outside; choose positions to suit.

Power, warmth and tidy-up

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. If you want lights or sockets, a qualified electrician must fit them; a playroom is no place for a DIY extension lead. Lay a washable floor covering or a rug and keep a vent open.

It will be a spring-to-autumn room unless you add your own lining and a safe heater.

Planning permission

A playroom for your own family is normally an ordinary outbuilding under the permitted-development rules. Sleepovers are fine, but a building used as a bedroom is a different matter, so check with your council.

Good to know

Is a shed safe for children to play in?

With sensible precautions, yes: keep tools and chemicals out, never fit a lock they cannot open from inside, and fix shelves to the wall. Supervise young children.

Can I put lights and sockets in?

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. Have a qualified electrician fit any electrics.

What size playroom do I need?

For a table and some storage, 8 x 6 works. If friends come over, 10 x 8 is more comfortable. Sizes are nominal, so check the real external size.

Will it be warm enough in winter?

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation, so plan it as a spring-to-autumn room unless you add a safe heater and lining with a qualified installer.
