Planning your bike storage

Plan it round the bikes

Bikes go in nose-first through the front, so the depth is the number that matters. An adult bike is about 1.8m long, which is why the sizes below start at 7ft deep, to leave room to turn it. Width decides how many bikes sit side by side.

A pent roof is lower at the back, so keep the handlebars towards the high front.

Doors that fit the handlebars

A single door opens 29″ wide, which clears most handlebars; double doors open 42″ and make wheeling a cargo bike or a tandem easier. Double doors need a clean 4ft panel slot, which every width except 5ft has.

Keep them safe

A windowless building means nobody can see what is inside. Add a ground anchor and a good lock, which we do not supply, and tell your insurer: policies differ on what they cover in an outbuilding.

Leave the door open on a dry day or add a vent to stop condensation. For motorbikes, read our motorbike storage guide.

Base and planning

A firm, level base matters for wheels. See our base guide. A bike shed is normally an ordinary outbuilding under the permitted-development rules.

Good to know

How many bikes fit in a shed?

Bikes enter nose-first, so width decides the count. Two fit in a 6ft width, three or four in 8ft. Keep handlebars staggered and use wall hooks to save floor.

Will my bikes be secure?

A windowless building hides them. Add a ground anchor and a good lock, which we do not supply, and check your insurance.

Do I need a double door?

A single door opens 29″ and suits most bikes; double doors open 42″ and are easier for cargo bikes and trailers.

Can I store a motorbike?

Read our motorbike storage guide first. It covers the size and door width you need.

Is the roof maintenance-free?

Composite buildings include an EPDM rubber roof. On timber, felt is standard and EPDM is an optional upgrade.
