Planning your workshop

Plan it around the bench

Put the bench along the window wall so the light falls on the work, and keep the opposite wall solid for racking. Add a partition in the Build Studio if you want to keep a dusty workshop apart from tool and garden storage.

The sizes below are the ordered nominal sizes. Allow for the bench depth, the clear space in front of it, and room to turn long stock.

Doors for long stock

A single door opens 29″ wide and double doors 42″, so a double door is worth having if sheet material, a mower or a mitre saw stand has to go through it. Double doors need a clean 4ft panel slot, which every width except 5ft has.

Strength, power and dust

Timber is tanalised UC3 with a 20-year anti-rot guarantee. Step up to Heavy Duty for 22mm loglap rather than 16mm shiplap if the building will take knocks.

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. Have power fitted by a qualified electrician, keep a vent or the door open when you sand or cut, and keep fuel and finishes out of a building you also heat.

Security, noise and planning

Tools are an easy target. Fewer windows on the lane side helps, and a security window is available in the Build Studio: the same width as a standard one but low-set, so it cannot be climbed through. If you run noisy machines, your neighbours are covered by noise rules that are separate from planning.

Good to know

What size shed makes a good workshop?

For a bench and tools, start around 10 x 6. If you want a machine or to leave a project on the floor, 12 x 8 and up is more comfortable. Sizes are nominal, so check the real external size.

Can I have double doors?

Yes, on any width except 5ft, which has no clean 4ft panel for them. The opening is 42″ wide, against 29″ for a single door.

Is a shed workshop secure?

You can keep windows to a minimum, choose a security window (low-set so it cannot be climbed through) or pick a dedicated Security Shed. Fit good locks and keep tools out of sight.

Can I run power to a workshop?

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. Have a qualified electrician run and fit the supply.

What is Heavy Duty?

A thicker 22mm loglap cladding in place of 16mm shiplap on any timber size. The anti-rot guarantee is the same 20 years either way, and the Build Studio shows the price as you switch it on.
