Browse security shedsFor a single bike plus a small bench, 8×6 is the practical minimum. Sports bikes with gear suit 10×6 or 10×8; touring and adventure bikes with panniers want 10×8 or 12×8. Allow around 600mm of walking space down one side and a metre at the front for wheeling in and out.
Our floors are tongue-and-groove boards on tanalised bearers, and the Heavy Duty spec is the one to choose for bikes. Whatever the floor, spread the stand’s point load: a 600×600mm paving slab or a rubber mat under the side/centre stand protects any timber floor from marking over time.
Specify double doors — the Build Studio places them wherever a clean 4ft opening fits, which takes any production bike. Pair it with a non-slip folding ramp rated above your bike’s wet weight, and on sloped gardens give the threshold a firm edge so the floor lip doesn’t wear.
Usually not: in England, garden buildings under 2.5m eaves height within permitted development rules generally don’t need permission, provided the shed sits behind the principal elevation and the garden isn’t more than half covered. Check with your council in conservation areas or for listed properties — our planning guide covers the detail.
Most UK insurers ask for a locked, immobile overnight location. A timber shed generally qualifies with a quality hasp and padlock, a ground anchor inside, and the bike chained to the anchor. The Heavy Duty spec’s 22mm loglap cladding — or a windowless layout, which the Build Studio does in a couple of taps — strengthens the case.
Bikes sweat overnight. Our buildings include a breathable membrane (on everything except greenhouses and BBQ buildings), which helps moisture escape without dripping back. Leave an air gap around the bike, add ventilation if the shed is tightly packed, and a paddock stand keeps it off the cold floor.
Double doors on the gable end, windowless walls for security — the Build Studio prices any layout instantly.
