Planning your art studio

Choose your light

Painters have long preferred north-facing light because it stays even through the day. A south-facing wall of glass gives a brighter, warmer room but moves across the floor and can overheat on a sunny afternoon.

In the Build Studio you decide which wall carries the windows and which stays solid for hanging work.

Headroom and wall space

An apex gives you height down the middle: inside, the eaves are 1757mm and the ridge rises to 2285mm on an 8ft width and 2417mm on 10ft, which suits a tall canvas on an easel. Keep one long solid wall for work in progress, and a second for storage.

Floors, fumes and power

Spills happen. Lay a washable floor covering over the floor, and keep solvents and finishes in a closed cupboard rather than on the open shelf. Open the door or a window when you work with solvents.

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. Have lighting and sockets fitted by a qualified electrician, and add a heater only if an installer says it is safe in a room that holds solvents.

Planning permission

A studio for your own use is normally an ordinary outbuilding under the permitted-development rules. If you plan to teach classes or sell from it, speak to your council first.

Good to know

Which way should an art studio face?

North-facing glass gives the most even daylight; south-facing gives a brighter, warmer room that moves across the floor and can get hot. Choose by how you like to work.

Is an apex or a pent better for a studio?

An apex has the most headroom down the middle, which suits tall canvases; a pent keeps a uniform high wall for hanging work. Both are available in timber and composite.

Can I store paper and canvases in it?

Timber and composite buildings are not climate-controlled, so keep irreplaceable work in the house. Good ventilation and a dry, level base help; see our base guide.

Can I add lighting and sockets?

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. Have a qualified electrician fit the supply and the lighting.
