Planning your garden bar

Put the hatch on the patio

A garden bar works because guests stand outside and you serve from within. Stand the building so the serving hatch faces the patio or the lawn where people will be, and keep the back to the neighbours.

The Build Studio has a bar serving hatch as a window option, so you place it exactly where the guests will stand.

Size it by the stools

Behind the counter you want space for a fridge, shelves and room to turn. Allow for the real external size, which differs a little from the nominal one, and consider where the stools sit outside.

Power, water and clean-up

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. Have power for a fridge and lighting fitted by a qualified electrician, and have any water supply fitted by a plumber.

Composite never needs painting and wipes clean with a cloth, which suits a room that gets sticky. Keep stock and glass out of sight when you are not there.

Serving friends and the rules

A bar for hosting friends and family is simply an outbuilding. Selling drinks needs a licence, so talk to your council before you do. If you want somewhere to cook as well, look at our BBQ and outdoor kitchens.

Good to know

What size garden bar do I need?

For a counter, a fridge and shelves, 8 x 6 is comfortable. Smaller works if it is only for a few drinks. Sizes are nominal, so check the real external size.

Can I plumb it in or add a fridge?

Our sheds and summer houses are supplied without wiring, plumbing, heating or insulation. Have a qualified electrician fit power and a plumber fit any water supply.

Does a garden bar need planning permission?

For private use it normally falls under the permitted-development rules for outbuildings; our guide sets them out. Selling drinks is a different matter and needs a licence.

Does it need painting?

Composite never needs painting; the colour runs through the board and it carries a 30-year manufacturer warranty.
