How to install EPDM rubber roofing

Five steps, basic tools, an afternoon. Fit on a dry day, work in fresh air (adhesive fumes), and mind your fingers with the knife.

Before you start

Fitting Your EPDM Rubber Roof

Once the roof boards are fixed on your 8×10ft apex building, everything in your kit goes on in five simple steps. Here's what you'll be working with:

The five steps

1Lay the rubber out over the roofLay the EPDM membrane on top and spread it out. Let it hang over all four sides evenly so you have enough to wrap and trim later.
2Let it relax for about 30 minutesThe rubber relaxes in the warmth and most of the creases drop out on their own. Put the kettle on.
3Roll each side back to the middleOn an apex roof, roll each side back to the ridge; on a pent roof, roll one half back to the centre — tightly, exposing the bare deck ready for adhesive.
4Apply the adhesive and roll it back outApply the spray adhesive to the exposed deck, then roll the rubber back out flat over it. Repeat for the other slope or half, then glue the rubber down to the sides of the roof all the way around.
5Add the fascia trim and cut the excessFix the fascia corner trim around the building with poly pins — drip trim on the front (and rear on an apex), standard edge trim on the remaining sides — then run a knife along the edge to remove the excess rubber.
